Dictating every aspect of each city and every territory is really what it's all about this time, and because of this, it takes a lot longer to build military forces and expand in comparison to earlier versions. Far less automated than Romance IX, Romance 10 is really big on micro-management. Nonetheless, the most significant change to the gameplay structure is its more deliberate pacing. But regardless of how you get there, the first guy whose status bar is completely depleted loses the debate. You can even pull off dialogue combos by making several valid points in a row. So while one guy may open up the conversation with a logical dispute, players can then counter that action by arguing another point or by inciting his foe so that he's so frustrated he can't think. The strategy, however, relies on what tactics each opponent uses at different points in the discussion. Treated like a fighting game of sorts, this debate system is pretty unusual and at its heart, is nothing more than rock/paper/scissors.

To avoid this kind of combat as often as possible, there's also a brand new debate feature that pits disagreeing factions against one another in a war of words rather than spears. From that point, you'll have to manage several battles at once with a simplified but higher-scale interface that will send hundreds of thousands of troops to their deaths. As your empire begins to grow, however, the scope of the combat moves far beyond that of simple city sieges and field battles, and transforms into all-out war. Local skirmishes help maintain your hold over current territory and they play out much like the combat sequences of games past.
ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS X SERIES
The visuals in Three Kingdoms X are certainly the best in the series so far.Īnother new addition is the inclusion of both regional and large-scale battle campaigns. There are more than 40 skills in all, and they're a lot more important to the development of your troops and your city than they were before. Successfully gaining experience in multiple areas can then open up more advanced skills like the Drill command (which is great for affecting morale) or the Maze ability that lets you build labyrinths on the battlefield.

This means that if you want to work on just one of your underling's Farming or Trading skills, you'll have to earn the needed experience for those particular fields by doing related tasks first. The officer skill system, for example, works a lot more realistically thanks to specialized experience points for each category. Less simplified than its predecessor, Romance 10 plays a lot more like a role-playing game with an emphasis on a couple of key new areas. Now in its fourth iteration for the PlayStation 2 (and its tenth overall), Romance of the Three Kingdoms X looks to be a more drastic reinterpretation of the series than last year's ninth installment.
